Gridlock: a city where traffic evolves

Gridlock

A city with no traffic laws in the code. Roads, physics and route finding are written by hand; how to drive the route is not. Every car is a NEAT brain that sees a fan of rays, its speed, which way its route goes and how sharp the next turn is, and it has to work out the rest.

What am I looking at?

Grey cars are the population; the orange one is the leader (or blue, the car you clicked). Red means just crashed and being towed back to the road.
The blue line is the followed car's route from A*, the yellow dot the point on it the car is steering for.
The thin lines from it are its five rays: blue where they hit a kerb, orange where they hit another car.
Red tail lights mean the brain is braking. Watch how rarely they come on.
On the right, the brain is the car's actual network (inputs left, steering and throttle right, evolved neurons between), and the bars under it are everything it feels this instant.
Traffic off: every car is a ghost driving the same fares. Traffic on: they share the road and can hit each other.
Wrecks stay leaves crashed cars in the road for ten seconds: with heavy traffic the city finally gridlocks, which it otherwise never does.
Blind to cars and Blind to walls switch a sense off. Trained drivers barely miss their sense of other cars; drivers raised without it come out a quarter worse.
